Primary method of connecting to the LIANE network at the dorms is connection to unswitched network, i.e. Ethernet (its faster versions, in fact). University accommodation facilities are, with several exceptions, furnished with Gigabit Ethernet. There is no fee charged for the network connection.
Apart from uswitched network, there is wireless network available as well. Wireless coverage is no way near ideal so far but is improving. There is no difference in the manner of using the wireless network at the dorms and other university sites.
Use the automatic configuration program to set-up your computer. It is available for MS Windows, Linux and OS X operating systems:
Before you try to connect, you have to create remote access password. This password is common for all kinds of remote connection including Wi-Fi and dormitory network.
When your remote access password is ready, download the suitable version of configuration program from the link above and install it. A dialogue appears after installation and connecting which asks for your user name and password. Provide the eduroam user name in the form name.surname@tul.cz (or the name assigned to you by your domestic domain) and the password for remote access which you created for this purpose. If the provided data is corrected communication is opened for your computer.
If you use different operating system or the configuration program failed, you have to perform manual configuration.
Your connection expires automatically as you leave or discontinue your accommodation at the dorms.
The dormitory network is sized according to the number of beds. Due to frequent filling of additional beds and use of laptops next to PCs at some rooms, there are not enough network sockets for connection of all the residents’ computers.
In these cases, indirect connection of other computers by suitable technical means is permitted. The easiest way is the use of Ethernet switch for this purpose – it is possible to connect up to three computers to one socket through the switch. There are other ways of connection, such as through connected computers, NAT device etc. However, they are more complicated that the switch that requires no configuration.
Device that carries out indirect connection of other computers must not send any signals to the dorm network (such as packets of routing protocols) that would interfere with other devices or computers. Use of wireless bridges (Wi-Fi) is not allowed.
Development of Harcov dorm network would not be possible without the projects of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports Fund for Development of Universities.
